Preserving our quality of life as we age comes down to what we refer to as the “Two M’s”: Memory and Mobility. Our cartilage and other joint tissues compress and deteriorate as we age with many accepting this as the natural course of life. But more recent research has shown that taking in the primary building blocks of cartilage can help to strengthen your joints and preserve and perhaps regain some mobility.
Understanding this helped us to develop our complete bone and joint solution Bone Essense™ featuring Kolla 2® (Type II Collagen).
What is Kolla 2® (Type II Collagen)?
Kolla 2® (Type II Collagen) is a formulation of type II collagen derived from chicken sternum cartilage through a patented process (US Patent #6,838,440). Kolla2® (Type II Collagen) also contains important glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), including chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid meaning it has all of the components of joint cartilage. Why chicken sternum? 95% of the collagens in this area are type II.
Type II vs Other Collagens
While collagen comes in many types, type II collagen is the most prevalent in elastic joint cartilage. So it's the one to concentrate on when addressing flexibility and mobility.
Other popular forms of collagen include:
Type I provides structure to your skin, bones, tendons, and ligaments
Type III is found in muscles, arteries, and organs
Type IV is found in the layers of your skin
Type V is found in the cornea of your eyes, some layers of skin, hair, and placenta tissue

How Kolla 2® (Type II Collagen) may help Cartilage
Cartilage tissues are a matrix composed mainly of type II collagen and proteoglycan aggregates. This collagen makes up 60% of the dry weight of the cartilage and provides tensile and shear strength to the tissue and overall matrix.
The function of cartilage in our body is to absorb shock, reduce friction and support the structure of our joints and skeletal system. As you can imagine, the stress of repetitive movements like running, walking or playing sports can cause damage and degradation. This problem is compounded by the body’s degraded ability to produce the collagen needed to repair cartilage over time.
Two primary conditions that result from this are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. In small-scale studies, patients reported decreased pain and better joint function and mobility after taking supplemental type II collagen. This suggests that taking in the building blocks of cartilage might have some ability to offset some of the negative effects of degradation.
Kolla 2® (Type II Collagen) vs Glucosamine
Glucosamine and chondroitin are popular supplements for improving and preserving mobility and for good reason. They’re both naturally occurring substances in the body; glucosamine helps to build and repair cartilage while chondroitin is a compound that’s thought to help keep it hydrated and prevent its degradation over time. They may only be part of the picture though.
Bone Essense™ with Kolla2® improves on this by providing a complete solution for bone and joint health. The formula includes calcium, Kolla2® (Type II collagen), glucosamine and chondroitin; As such, it provides the constituents for bone density, cartilage repair, cartilage hydration, and shock absorption.

Quality Control
Kolla2® (Type II Collagen) is manufactured in a GMP facility under strict quality control standards. The Kolla2® (Type II Collagen) manufacturing process has been validated through SDS-PAGE gel, enzymatic digestion, ELISA, and other analytical methods in-house and through independent labs. FT-NIR is used on every batch to identity-check the product and to verify that it is made consistently.
Bottom Line
Everyday life and its activities add up. The stress, wear and tear on our bodies combined with losing the ability to produce our own collagen over time can result in us having to give up our favorite activities or dealing much greater difficulty to perform them. Bone Essense™ with Kolla 2® (Type II Collagen) provides a range of constituents for stronger bones, and more flexible joints to aid in preserving your mobility and quality of life.
