You may not have heard of Panax Notoginseng but it’s been one of the most important herbs in China where it's been used for over 400 years for numerous areas of heart health. Recently, it’s been gaining interest in the west. So let’s take a look at how Panax Notoginseng may help your heart.
What is Panax Notoginseng?
Panax notoginseng is one of the most acclaimed herbs in Chinese medicine. It’s grown in southwestern China, where the roots are harvested at 3-5 years of age. Although its name is similar, it shouldn’t be confused with panax ginseng or American ginseng since they are not the same. Note that Notoginseng is extracted from Panax ginseng.
How Panax Notoginseng Might Benefit Heart Health*
Saponins
Panax notoginseng contains a special compound called saponin also referred to as panax notoginseng saponin (PNS). This compound potentially offers several cardioprotective effects that researchers are investigating further including lowering blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels, preventing blood clots, blocking the absorption of cholesterol and lowering blood cholesterol levels.
Panax Notoginseng May Lower Blood Pressure
In animal studies, saponin treatment lowered blood pressure within the first five days of treatment. However, western clinical evidence on humans is limited. The working theory cited in this publication is that the panax notoginseng saponins relax blood vessels, which may allow better blood flow. The theorized result is lowering blood pressure.
Panax Notoginseng May Lower Cholesterol
Lipids like LDL Cholesterol and their buildup are what many doctors blame for heart disease. An animal study investigating whether panax notoginseng could combat lipid accumulation showed significantly lower cholesterol levels in the test group. Studies show reduction of hyperlipidemia, protection against artery injuries, anti-inflammatory properties, and regulation of lipid profiles.
Antioxidant Properties
Panax Notoginseng has antioxidant properties which help to suppress oxidative stress and inflammation. It has strong scavenging activity for free radicals which gives it great potential in preventing cardiovascular diseases. This is important because inflammation is at the root of many heart problems. It contributes to narrow blood vessels, plaque buildup, blood clots, irregular heart rhythm, and myocarditis.
VigorHeart's Formula
VigorHeart contains 100mg of panax notoginseng per serving, complemented by CoQ10 and Salvia Miltiorrhiza. It’s a blend of herbalism’s most heralded heart-strengthening ingredients produced to the strictest quality and uniformity standards.
Bottom Line
Panax Notoginseng is an important herb that’s heralded for its heart health benefits. It’s use has mainly been in China but it’s gaining notoriety in the United States where researchers hope that it’s use continues to be supported by more thorough clinical evidence.
